A Swinger of Birches

I found this beautiful picture yesterday. There are wonderful old pictures on-line. If a picture is more than 100 years old, the copyright laws do not apply and you can use them, like I am doing here. Anyway, this one made me think of this beautiful poem by Robert Frost.

Birches
Robert Frost

When I see birches bend to left and right
Across the lines of straighter darker trees,
I like to think some boy's been swinging them.
But swinging doesn't bend them down to stay.
Ice-storms do that. Often you must have seen them
Loaded with ice a sunny winter morningAfter a rain.
They click upon themselvesAs the breeze rises, and turn many-coloredAs the stir cracks and crazes their enamel.
Soon the sun's warmth makes them shed crystal shells
Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust--
Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away
You'd think the inner dome of heaven had fallen.
They are dragged to the withered bracken by the load,
And they seem not to break; though once they are bowed
So low for long, they never right themselves:
You may see their trunks arching in the woods
Years afterwards, trailing their leaves on the ground
Like girls on hands and knees that throw their hair
Before them over their heads to dry in the sun.
But I was going to say when Truth broke in
With all her matter-of-fact about the ice-storm
(Now am I free to be poetical?)
I should prefer to have some boy bend them
As he went out and in to fetch the cows--Some boy too far from town to learn baseball,
Whose only play was what he found himself,Summer or winter, and could play alone.
One by one he subdued his father's trees
By riding them down over and over again
Until he took the stiffness out of them,And not one but hung limp, not one was left
For him to conquer. He learned all there was
To learn about not launching out too soon
And so not carrying the tree awayClear to the ground. He always kept his poise
To the top branches, climbing carefully
With the same pains you use to fill a cup up to the brim, and even above the brim. Then he flung outward, feet first, with a swish,Kicking his way down through the air to the ground.
So was I once myself a swinger of birches.
And so I dream of going back to be. It's when I'm weary of considerations,
And life is too much like a pathless wood
Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs
Broken across it, and one eye is weeping
From a twig's having lashed across it open.I'd like to get away from earth awhile
And then come back to it and begin over.May no fate willfully misunderstand me
And half grant what I wish and snatch me away
Not to return. Earth's the right place for love:I don't know where it's likely to go better.
I'd like to go by climbing a birch tree,
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk
Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more,
But dipped its top and set me down again.
That would be good both going and coming back.
One could do worse than be a swinger of birches.

Ride in the Country

Jim and I went for a nice ride yesterday. We took Tofu cause she definately has "Cabin Fever". We started out at a friends house to trim a vine that had grown out of control (Chris...thats your backyard). Tofu had a ball running all around the huge wide open space. We then headed out to Southbury for a Starbucks treat.

Ready to go...

Sunny Sunday

I need to go and get ready for church, but came across this and thought that I would post it today, cause it's Sunday and I'm thinking about how blessed I am and how I can't wait to get to church and sing my lungs out to the one who rescued me. If you are still with me, this was on Beth Moore's blog this morning.

Then those who feared the Lord talked with each other, and the Lord listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in His presence concerning those who feared the Lord and honored His name. Malachi 3:16 NIV

Try to grasp what that Scripture suggests. Every time we boast in the Lord with each other - face-to-face, on the phone, picking the kids up at school, in the women's restroom at church, over email, on the blog - He stops to "listen and hear." Two different words are described for the attentiveness of His response. God listens. God HEARS. Scripture doesn't waste words. (John 21:25) If it uses several different descriptions to say the same general thing, we need to take notice because that intensity is meant to turn up the volume. The next sentence indicates that a secretary in the Kingdom of Heaven literally records either the occasion or perhaps the conversation itself on something called "a scroll of remembrance." I don't know about you but over the course of my life time, I want to keep that secretary writing as fast as his hand can fly across that scroll. Even this moment, a historical record is being kept of our communication in His Name. That's too much, isn't it?

Loved that. I hope we sing this http://www.tangle.com/view_video.php?viewkey=222ae9cdf71b55a02193 this morning!

Have a great day!

Saturday Fun

I am about to go and cook dinner for my guys, but have been fooling around with blog stuff and have figured out ( I think), how to sign each entry. Here goes...

Oh my gosh, it worked. Amazing!!! Well, I pooped Jim out today with errands and grocery shopping. Since we were going to spend and extended amount of time together today, and we were both tired from a busy week, we made a pact this morning to be patient, kind and loving to each other. To make this easier, we decided that I should drive. We started off at the Whittemore Library, then zipped over to the car wash for 2 passes thru. We then dashed to the Southbury Stop and Shop for the weekly shopping. So far so good. We were greeted at the door by a friendly gal, who asked us if we would like to use this new system of shopping called "easy shop". Basically, you carry around this little scan gun and scan and bag your items as you go. It keeps a running tally and also alerts you to any sale items along the way. It also chirps when there is a secret sale item that only people using "easy shop" are privy to. The big plus is...no check out. You just go to a register, scan that you are done and a receipt prints out, and you are good to go. Sounded great to me. I am up for anything that makes this dreaded chore faster and easier. We decided to give it a whirl. Ten minutes into this experience, we knew that we had made a big mistake. Produce alone took us 1/2 hr. Jim was actually clenching his jaws together by the time we got to the frozen food so he could remain "patient, kind and loving", and HE DID IT!!! Thanks honey, I know it took some real self control. And I must say "kudos" to Stop and Shop for finding a way to not only charge you a fortune for your groceries, but you get to do all the work (scanning, bagging) as well. Whew, I got a little long winded today, but here's a quick tip. You may in the future be tempted to try out this new method of shopping. You will see the shiny, purple scan gun with the pretty red laser light. The friendly girl who greets you at the door will be very convincing. Here comes my tip. RUN, run as fast as you can. Progress and technology is not always a good thing.

Be Mine

Happy Valentines Day everyone, and to my sweet Valentine XOXO.
No special plans for this day of love. Zachary celebrated yesterday with his girlfriend Tina. They went to the movies and exchanged cutsie gifts (there is a 4 foot teddy bear now residing in Zach's room). I think Kate and Jeff have plans for later. After a very busy week for me I am content to do home things today. I have a plan to kidnap Jim later for a trip to Starbucks and then a ride in the country. We'll see...

What's Real

I started this blog and I think it will be a way for friends and family to get a glimpse into our family's daily life. We are all seperated by distance, but not in each others hearts. One of my local friends has been reading my daily entries and she made a comment to me that she felt jealous of our life. I was thinking of this page like an ongoing scrapbook. I wouldn't put pictures and comments in my photo albums of unhappy moments. The reality is, our home is not always cozy. We struggle with the same issues that every other family struggles with. I hope anyone who is reading this knows that. This is just meant for fun and it is a great creative outlet for me.

Better Late than never

Kate took a bunch of pictures at Christmas that I am just now getting around to putting up. I was posting them on facebook this morning and thought I would put them up here as well. I think that I already posted as to how we did Christmas this year...so here's the pictures.

Winter...bring it on

It took me forever to find a public photo of a groundhog. Not Phil, but it will have to do. So...6 more weeks of winter, if you put any stock in this nonsense.
I am just about to start dinner. We are having BLT's with Turkey bacon on thick sliced whole grain bread and yummy fries. If you have never tried the brand "Alexia", you should. They make organic frozen fries and several varieties of frozen potatoes that are sooooo good. No trans fats and just potatoes, canola oil/sunflower oil, and sea salt.
We are all going to eat dinner together and watch the new (hour long) episode of "The Office" that was on last night after the Superbowl. Jim was smart enough to DVR it for us. Thanks honey!

Sunday Stuff

I cannot believe that our outdoor thermometer reads 50. I walked out onto the deck and if I close my eyes it feels like a cool spring day! I still am not feeling so great so I missed church. I was checking out "GodTube" and came across the videos of songs that I am loving right now. Don't know if the links will work but here they are, if you want to take a look.

Dreaming of Spring

We had another dusting of snow last night. Jim is away visiting his sister on this Super Bowl weekend. I am not feeling well, so I am home today thinking about warmer days and watching movies on the Hallmark Channel. I also applied to a few jobs on-line, but the pickings are slim.
Kate has put in her first full week at her new job, and on Friday actually assisted with the filling of a cavity. Get this...she loved it. She looks so cute in her scrubs.
Hope you are all enjoying the weekend!

Oh No

I got in my car after work yesterday and when I shut the door, my back windshield exploded into a million pieces. Evidently, while I was parked, a small rock must have kicked up from the main road and cracked the glass. When I shut the door the whole thing shattered. I happily discovered that it is covered 100 % by our auto policy with no deductible. Hurray. They will come out to the house today put in a new one.

It was very chilly driving home like this!

She did it!

I am happy to announce that Kate has a job. She interviewed last week for a receptionist/assistant position at a dentist office in Waterbury. They called her on Friday and offered her the job. She starts today. Hurray for her! Congratulations Kati Caterpillar, you've got your foot in the door!

Mystery Solved

I was on my way home from Southbury yesterday, I came the long way through Woodbury because I love that drive. I was crossing over Rte. 84 on South St. in Middlebury and there perched on the bridge looking down on the highway, was a much larger version of the bird Jim and I saw last week. I passed it quickly and then turned around so that I could take a picture of it with my phone. I pulled along side of it, and was only about 5 feet away. I rolled down my window and I must have spooked it because it seemed to just fall off of the bridge. I put my phone down and when I looked up it was swooping right toward my open window. I screamed and truly thought that it was going to fly right in. It didn't, but flew right across the front of the car so I got a great "up close" look. At that close range it reminded me of a golden eagle, it was huge and seemed to cover the entire windshield with it's wings. We think it was either a red shouldered hawk, or red tailed hawk. Amazing. So, no hawk picture, but here are some of my scenic ride home.

A Stitch in Time

I have quite a lot of free time at Mrs. O'Ladie's . I started bringing little sewing projects with me to help pass the time. I noticed that Mrs. O'Ladie had some things that needed mending and so I offered to do it for her. Now, every Sat she has things that she has set aside for me during the week to work on. Hems, missing buttons, loose seams etc... This is a lead up to write about her wonderful sewing basket. It is a medium sized blue satin covered box. It has 2 levels inside. The bottom level stores a small wooden box filled with buttons, a well worn and needle marked wooden egg shaped sock darner, and many small boxes filled with pins and needles. A sturdy plastic tray fits in to make the top level. It holds about 20 very old wooden spools of 100 % silk thread all in perfect condition. She has a small scissors with a 14kt yellow gold handle that are sharpened to perfection. I am in my glory. You have to understand, not only did my Mom show me how to mend seams, hem,and sew on buttons, she also had me take sewing lessons for several summers and made sure I signed up for sewing courses all through high school (Thanks Mom!). When I was pregnant with John...on Mothers Day, she gave me a beautiful Singer sewing machine that I still use regularly. I sewed for the kids when they were young, especially Kate. So mending for Mrs. O'Ladie and using her beautiful supplies is a joy. Quite often I think that I am benefiting more from this arrangement than she is.

The pictures are not the greatest...taken with my phone.

Mystery

Jim spotted this large bird up in our oak tree this morning. The pictures do not show how huge it really is. At first we thought it was an owl because of it's size, but on closer inspection it had a hawk type face. It had a tannish spotted breast, tinged in orange. It's tail hung way down, and it was black and white striped. If anybody knows what kind of bird this is, please post a comment for me. There have been recent reports of hawks scooping up small dogs in our area, so we are being cautious when letting Tofu out.

These pics are blurry...taken thru the bathroom screen.

It's a Dogs Life...

The first part of my life is a bit sketchy. If you aren't familiar with my story, I was rescued by a nice young man from an outdoor life in NYC. He brought me home to his family and life has never been better. I went from sniffing around in gutters for crumbs to 2 square meals a day (treats too!!). Life is good.
I am usually included on family outings. (Central Park)

I've been on vacations. (Maine)

Picnics
And at the end of a busy day...I know my place.

Not too shabby...

Night Out

Jim and I finally got out to celebrate our Anniversary last Friday night. We had a wonderful dinner at "The Good News Cafe" in Woodbury. Jack and Cassie had given us a gift certificate, which we used to the fullest extent. So much fun.

My Job

Thought it might be fun to show you where I work. I've worked here since 1999, behind the scenes. I do the insurance billing for this physical therapy/chiropractic office. It is an interesting position. It is much more challenging now because of all of the cutbacks by employers and their desire to switch over to HMO's to save money, and pass more of the health care cost off on their employee's. UGH. Unfortunately, I need full time hrs. and that is not possible here (28 hrs at most). So I am searching for a new job. No easy task in this economy.
